What is Matcha?

Matcha is a Japanese green tea powder made from ground green tea leaves. Our matcha leaves are 100% shade grown, hand picked, steamed, dried and then stone ground into a fine powder. Matcha has a rich umami flavour with a hint of sweetness.

Where does your Matcha come from?

Our matcha comes from the Uji region of Japan, an area commonly known as the birthplace of matcha. Its perfect combination of climate and terrain produces some of the highest quality of matcha in the world.

How do I prepare Matcha?

1.Add two scoops of matcha using your Chashaku (bamboo spoon) or one teaspoon of matcha to your Chawan (or a small bowl).

2. Add 30ml of hot water (ideally 80 degrees) and whisk using your chasen (bamboo whisk) thoroughly until there are no lumps. You can also use a small electric whisk or milk frother here if preferred. If sweetening add a touch of honey (or preferred alternative) at this stage and mix again briefly.

4. If enjoying cold, pour your milk over ice and add the matcha mixture. If not, heat or froth your milk and pour over the matcha mixture. You can use your milk of choice, we love oat milk!

What does ceremonial mean?

Matcha comes in different grades, the highest quality grade of matcha is known as ceremonial. Ceremonial grade matcha is made from shade-grown tea leaves that are carefully ground into a fine powder, resulting in a vibrant green colour and a smooth, creamy texture. It is characterised by its rich flavour, with a delicate balance of natural sweetness, unami and slight bitterness.

For our ceremonial grade matcha we use the first (spring) harvest of tea leaves for the highest quality experience.

What are the benefits of drinking Matcha?

Studies have found several benefits to drinking matcha:

1. It is antioxidant-rich: matcha is known for its high concentration of antioxidants, in particular catechins. These antioxidants help neutralise harmful free radicals in the body, which if not neutralised, can lead to oxidative stress and damage to cells.

2. Focus and alertness: matcha contains caffeine and provides a sustained release of energy without the jitters or crash, we like to refer to it as green caffeine.

3. Boosted metabolism: Studies have shown matcha helps to increase your metabolism and fat oxidation.

4. Nutrition: matcha contains vitamins A, C and E, as well as trace minerals such as zinc and selenium. It also contains fibre, chlorophyll and other beneficial plant compounds.

5. Antibacterial properties: studies have shown matcha has antibacterial properties, which help promote oral health, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.

Is Matcha a good alternative for Coffee?

Yes! Matcha contains caffeine, which will help improve concentration and alertness, but it also contains L-theanine which has been shown to promote relaxation and mental clarity, resulting in a state of calm focus.
